Chapter Seventeen

The prick of the IV needle made Diana jump, and pulled an uneasy laugh from her.

Ryder moved quickly to her side as Melissa worked on inserting the tube.

“I’m okay. Just getting a little soft, I suspect,” Diana said. His keeper’s kiss had only worked for a couple of days, and the constant, cramp-inducing activity of the baby warned that they had just about run out of time.

“I’m sorry, Di. I should have been gentler,” Melissa said as she finished hooking up the IV bags with plasma and saline to boost Diana’s low blood pressure. She connected a third bag, explaining, “This is a corticosteroid to help with development of the baby’s lungs. But the effects will last only a week—”

“It won’t be that long, Melissa,” Diana said with conviction.

Her sister-in-law glanced worriedly between her and Ryder. “Are you sure there’s no other way?”

Ryder muttered a curse and raked his fingers through his hair in agitation. “Don’t you think if there were—”

Diana laid a hand on his arm to calm him. Facing her sister-in-law, she said, “You got the last blood test. You know how bad it is, right?”

Melissa’s gaze shimmered with tears. With a quick nod, she said, “I need to go tell Sebastian. He’ll want to come to say— ” She bit her lower lip. “He’ll need a moment with you alone, Di. You know he’ll try to convince you not to go through with it.”

She knew. Her brother only wanted what was best for her, but she had no choice. Not if she wanted to live. She was dying, and so was the baby. She needed to do this to save herself and her daughter, but more important, she needed to do this because she loved Ryder and wanted her happily-ever-after with him. The few years they’d had together were not enough. Not when she could have forever.

He sat on the edge of the bed and cradled her face in his big hands. “I love you. I will do whatever you want, even if it means letting you go,” he said, his voice husky with emotion.

“I’m not going anywhere, Ryder. I love you, too, and I want to be with you. For always.” She leaned forward and kissed him, leaving no doubt that she was firm in her decision.

Between them, the baby moved powerfully, painfully, making Diana groan.

“Damn, Charlie. Quiet down. You’ll be here soon enough,” she said, stroking a hand across her belly.

Ryder moved his hands across her belly, too, urging the baby to calm as Diana leaned back against the bed pillows, exhausted.

In the last few days, the contamination in her blood had progressed to the point that her body was no longer adequately performing most basic functions. Each breath, every heartbeat, barely sustained her, and she was constantly tired and weak. So weak she could only stay awake for a few hours at a time.

In her short time of wakefulness this morning, she had to put her house in order. Which meant talking to her brother, Sebastian, and giving her mother a call.
